Beef Bafat

Beef Bafat is a delicious beef curry prepared with bafat powder. The bafat powder is filled with unique flavour and when added to meat and vegetables gives a great taste. The bafat powder I used here is a store bought one. It is available in most of the Mangalorean stores. You can also make it at home. If you don’t have time to prepare the powder you can instantly make the bafat paste by grinding. I have tried when I ran out of bafat powder and it gave me good result. Do try this and let me know.

Preparation time : 10 mins
Cooking time       : 15 mins
Serves                   : 3 people

Ingredients:
Beef with or without bone–Half kg (I have removed the fat)
1 large onion chopped
2 medium sized tomatoes chopped
1 green chilly
3 large cloves of garlic chopped
1 inch ginger chopped finely
1 inch cinnamon
2-3 cloves
1 teaspoon bafat powder (you can increase according to your spice tolerance level)
Salt to taste
Half teaspoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon oil

Method:

Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cloves and cinnamon.

Add green chiily, ginger and garlic saute for a minute till nice aroma comes. Add onions saute till transparent. Add Tomatoes cook for five minutes and add beef, salt and bafat powder.

Cover and cook in a medium low heat and take 4 whistles (it depends on how tender the meat is). If it is not cooked, take more whistles. switch off the flame. This is semi-dry dish. if you need more gravy then add half cup water. Meat also leaves lot of water. So carefully add water depending on how you want to eat it.

After the pressure goes completely, open the lid and do the taste check for salt, and add lemon juice.

Serve hot with chapathi or rice.

Note: If you dont have bafat powder then grind 4 long dry red chillies, 3 pepper corns, half teaspoon coriander seeds, half teaspoon cumin seeds and  half teaspoon turmeric powder in a blender adding little water. This is the bafat paste.
